Another
slice of Norwegian d'n'b ice slides its way into the UK this
winter with Certificate 18's new Scandinavian imports Future
Prophecies.
Richard Animashaun Thomas & Tony Anthun are the duo who
have worked as DJs and jazz musicians all over the world, releasing
records on Subtitles, Boombox and Kickin'. Now their dual-purpose
sonic assault, combining a distinct musical prowess and rugged
dancefloor know-how, has produced this three track EP
which may well turn out to be another Certificate 18 rare classic
Future Prophecies' organic, almost virtuoso production style
is evident on the widescreen opener, 'Euphoria'. The beats skips
between a full and half-speed d'n'b break, washed out with sweeping
synths, superimposed with gently-measure flute licks and all
tied together by an eastern-flavoured vocal.
'Suicide' ventures further into the darkside - built around
a dreamy sample of Nicolette from Massive Attack's classic 'Protection'
Album: it's the standout moment on the EP, but also the reason
why this release is destined to be something of a rarity. The
deep sound of downtempo Bristol fuses sublimely with scatty
beats while the keys add a tension that infuses Nicolette's
vocal with new intensity.
Parting shot 'Deep Impact' toughens up, rumbles along and bares
its teeth - Future Prophecies showing their harder-edged dancefloor
side in sharp contrast to the more cerebral workings of the
first two-tracks.
Get it while you can, because it may not be around for long
