Certificate 18's prodigal son Polar leads us out of the dirge of
winter with his spring/summer collection of deep rolling breakbeats
of all persuasions. As the sequel to last year's critically acclaimed
debut 'Still Moving', the new 8 track offering sees Norwegian exile
K aka Polar moving further away from his drum 'n' bass beginnings
into deeper, more diverse water.
Embracing the
multi-tempo territory that was hinted at on the 'White Chambers
EP', the new LP is startling evidence of a 23-year old production
whizz-kid spreading his wings. From the staccato splendour of opener
'Love Is In The Ear' to weird-hop secret track 'Outro', those who
caught on to Polar's considerable talent in his previous excursions
will revel in the new ground K is treading.
The ice cool
drum 'n' bass workouts that K made his mark with still remain in
their understated glory, on tracks like 'The Other Side' and 'Out
of Range', but it's the excursions beyond his usual production plane
that will really impress. Haunting electro sensibilities and ultra-slick,
virtuoso production skills provide the basis for killer cuts 'Safari',
'Behind The Scenes' and the more downtempo 'Lectric'.
Hypnotic, groovy,
dark and deeply electronic - it's Polar at his very finest, with
a deft touch in every detail of every sound: trademark wintery keys
and synths soaring over the rolling crystalline breaks. You know
it's Polar, but you don't know how he makes those sounds cut so
deep
This is the
second LP from the San Francisco based producer, who first made
his mark with killer track 'Hidden Rooms' which was swiftly followed
with mini-LP '37 Degrees and Falling' - all on Certificate 18. He
continues to impress not only the d'n'b cognoscenti, but garners
praise from such diverse figures as Gilles Peterson, Amon Tobin,
Plaid, Adam Freeland and Mixmaster Morris.
