18 presents three cuts of deep, downtempo electronica from the
latest label prodigy - Polar, set to release his debut album 'Still
Moving' next month. Moody, emotional and brooding - like a film
noir soundtrack infused with hip hop and drum'n'bass - these 3 tracks
lifted from the CD version of the LP indicate some of the musical
paths that the 22 year-old Norwegian may be seen treading with his
future output, and mark his development and versatility as a producer.
Those already in the know include Gilles Peterson, Plaid, Doc Scott,
Goldie and Adam Freeland
while 'Still Moving' is set to captivate
anyone who likes their music with darkness and feeling in equal
measure.
Opener 'White Walls' drifts insidiously through the speakers with
a reverberating synth riff, gradually undertowing a downsliding
bassline and echoing voices before opening out with dreamy, edgy
strings and a tough midtempo break. 'The White Chambers' shifts
up the tempo, but holds the feeling, intertwined melodies threaded
aroung staccato d'n'b rhythms - while distant, muffled horns and
a lazy live break punctuate the Morricone-esque atmospherics of
'Near The Horizon'.
Transcending genre, and plotting a gentle course through the dark
half of your brain - this is eyes closed, headphones-on, home-listening
at its atmospheric best.
